BESS – Energy Storage Systems

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are an innovative solution that enables the efficient use of energy produced from renewable sources and its reliable management. With their help, electricity generated during periods of low consumption or high production can be stored and used when it is most needed. This enables better grid stability, lower costs, and greater energy independence.
BESS is not just a battery, but a complex system combining control electronics, software, and communication, which together form an intelligent energy infrastructure.
How does BESS work?
- Charging
When energy production exceeds consumption—for example, during the day with photovoltaic systems—the surplus is directed to the batteries. - Intelligent control
Energy management software (EMS) monitors data on production, consumption, and electricity prices in real time. This allows the system to make automatic decisions on when to store energy and when to release it. - Discharging/supplying to the grid
During peak consumption or high electricity prices, the stored energy is used. This reduces the need for expensive peak supplies from the grid and ensures power stability.
In this way, BESS balances the dynamics between production and consumption, bringing security and economic benefits to businesses and households.
Main components of the system
- PCS (Power Conversion System)
A bidirectional AC/DC converter that allows batteries to be charged and discharged while providing high-quality, stable energy to consumers. - Batteries (LiFePO₄)
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) cells are used, which are proven to be safer, more durable, and have a longer service life than standard lithium-ion batteries. In addition, they support a greater number of charge and discharge cycles. - BMS (Battery Management System)
A battery management system that monitors parameters such as voltage, temperature, and current. It balances the charge of the cells, protects against overloading, and extends battery life. - EMS (Energy Management System)
A hardware and software solution that analyzes consumption, production, and market price data in real time. EMS optimizes system performance and allows integration with smart home or industrial energy platforms. - Electrical panel and protections
Includes fuses, contactors, measuring devices, and controllers for safe operation. It coordinates the flow of energy between batteries, the grid, and consumers.
Applications
- In addition to balancing renewable sources and saving energy, BESS can be used for:
- Backup power for businesses with critical infrastructure where the power supply must not be interrupted.
- Stabilizing local networks—for example, in factories, business parks, or shopping centers.
- Participation in the energy market – peak shaving, dynamic pricing, or demand response, which allows for additional revenue.
Advantages of BESS
- Optimal use of renewable sources – eliminates losses from unused production.
- Cost savings – use of stored energy when market prices are high.
- Reliability – backup power supply in case of accidents or grid failure.
- Flexibility – applicable in industry, commercial facilities, and households.
- Sustainability – reduction of carbon footprint and better utilization of green energy.
- Integration with smart systems – possibility for load management, dynamic pricing, and energy management.
