When selecting lighting fixtures—whether for the home, office, industrial space, or outdoor environments—one of the key technical specifications to consider is the so-called IP rating (Ingress Protection). This is an international standard that indicates the degree of protection of electrical devices against the ingress of solid objects (such as dust, sand, etc.) and water or moisture.
The IP code consists of two digits, each of which has its own meaning:
- The first digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of solid objects (e.g., dust, insects, fingers, etc.). It ranges from 0 (no protection) to 6 (complete protection against dust).
- The second digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of liquids (water, moisture, rain, etc.) and also ranges from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protection against powerful water jets under pressure or immersion).

What does the IP rating look like in practice?
The code format is IPXY, where X and Y are the first and second digits, respectively. For example:
IP20 – protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm (e.g., fingers), but no protection against water. Suitable for indoor, dry areas such as a bedroom or living room.
IP44 – protection against particles larger than 1 mm and water splashes from any direction. This is a typical choice for lighting in a bathroom, balcony, porch, or entryway.
IP65 – complete protection against dust and protection against water jets. Often used for outdoor lighting on facades, parking lots, or gardens.
IP67 – complete protection against dust and the ability to be submerged in water up to 1 meter for a limited time. Suitable for in-ground installation, around pools, or near fountains.
Why is IP protection important?
Safety – the correct IP rating ensures that the light fixture will not pose a risk of short circuit or electric shock when exposed to moisture or dust.
Long service life – luminaires with appropriate protection are resistant to weather conditions, which significantly extends their lifespan.
Cost savings – when lighting is properly selected for a specific environment, it does not fail prematurely, reducing replacement and repair costs.
Peace of mind – knowing that the lighting system is well-protected provides confidence and security for both households and businesses.
How to choose the right IP rating based on the installation location?
| Installation location | Recommended IP rating |
| Indoor areas (dry) | IP20–IP23 |
| Bathroom – area around sink or shower | IP44–IP65 |
| Outdoor canopy, balcony | IP44–IP65 |
| Garden, yard | IP65–IP67 |
| Swimming pool, fountain, water features | IP67–IP68 |
| Industrial or dusty areas | IP54–IP66 |
IP protection is not just a technical detail—it is directly related to the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the lighting system. Whether it’s a lamp in the living room or a garden floodlight, the correct IP rating guarantees safety and long-lasting performance.
